As we plunge further into the year 2010 and enjoy all of the great games of the year, it’s time to look back on 2009 and the effect that action games had on the video game industry and the revival of a certain struggling console. Of course, most gamers would point to games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. However, for the purposes of this wrap up, we will ignore games that were mainly shooters and focus on games where pure action was the primary objective.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Many people have a specific game reason when purchasing a console. You might have purchased a Super Nintendo because of Super Mario World or a Nintendo 64 because of Goldeneye 007. Many people finally went out and purchased a Playstation 3 because of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. This explosive PS3 exclusive game was one of the most positively received games of this generation and still ranks on many lists as one of the greatest games of all time.
Assassin’s Creed II
Also available on the PS3, Assassin’s Creed II was an action/adventure game greeted with widespread critical acclaim and earned several accolades such as the best Xbox 360 game of 2009 and best action game of the year from IGN during the 2009 Spike Video Game Awards. Assassin’s Creed II also was widely regarded as being one of the best video game sequels of all time. It made some leaps and bounds over the game play quality of the original and made way for the highly anticipated third installment in the series.

God of War Collection
The God of War series has truly cemented its place in video game history. Another Playstation exclusive, the God of War collection updated the game play from the older entries in the series to prepare players for the upcoming release of God of War III. These changes were not irrelevant or insignificant, either. Updates to the graphics, especially, gave players what they wanted and also served to bridge the gap between the most popular PS2 games and the next generation. For a console that, often confusingly, has limited capabilities for backwards compatibility, this release was welcome news for many gamers that loved the series – especially with the often included coupon for the release of God of War III.
Resident Evil 5
Although also classified as a survival horror game in some circles, Resident Evil 5 is really an action/adventure game in all respects. Resident Evil 5 was a fun and addicting game to play, thanks to some of the RPG elements added to game play. However, it had nowhere near the reception that Resident Evil 4 enjoyed in its day. Still, it was a blast to play and allowed the player to enjoy the action elements without having to worry about whether there would be enough ammunition to take down the next group of foes.
